Blue Perk

This week, we got the chance to get to chat with Freddy Rodriguez of the Blue Perk fashion & lifestyle blog and Instagram account, @blueperk. Freddy’s Blue Perk blog, is dedicated to sharing his passions for fashion, among other things.

Having just returned from his honeymoon, Freddy was kind enough to take the time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for us!

Q: So Freddy, tell us, what inspired you to get into fashion blogging? Have there been any challenges along the way?

A: I started blogging my freshman year of college just after moving to New York from San Antonio, Texas. I was attending the Fashion Institute of Technology studying Fashion Merchandising Management and didn’t know anyone in NYC at the time. I had taken notice of a couple of fashion bloggers like Bryan Boy and Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes who were already really successful. There was a small community at my school pursuing fashion blogging as well like Danielle Bernstein of We Wore What and Nicole Lohr who I became friends with over time. In the beginning we would take each others photos, attend events, started to get gifted clothes, and then ultimately getting paid opportunities. All of those perks were great incentives for me to continue building my brand.

The biggest challenge in the beginning was juggling school with the rapid growth of blogging opportunities. There were moments I felt like dropping out to take on blogging full-time. Coming from a small town in Texas, it meant a lot to my parents to graduate. Even though, I finished my degree, my senior year of college I had to convince my professors to allow me to take a week off before finals to take a press trip to Thailand. Luckily I was quite persuasive. For one of my classes my professor just asked me to do presentation about my blog and how I was able to take a paid trip to Thailand.

After graduation from the Fashion Institute of Technology time management got much less challenging. I moved to Berlin two weeks later to blog full-time and travel throughout Europe and Asia for a year until I had visa problems. Upon my return to New York, I wanted to try a full-time job at a digital agency. Recently, I left my role as the Social Media Manager at The 88 managing the rebranding for Jos. A. Bank to give my full attention to blogging and taking freelance opportunities.

Q: Freddy, when thinking about Europe and America, what strikes you the most in terms of fashion?

A: How simply Americans dress, especially in middle America. Europe is much more diverse with each country having their own identity and sense of style. My favorite country to visit is Paris. I always feel inspired to dress up.

Q: What does a day in the life of Freddy Rodriguez of the Blue Perk look like?

A: A typical day starts around 8am. When my husband leaves for work, I start by checking my Instagram and emails. I then like to do a morning workout before getting back to emails and posting my first Instagram post of the day. Afterwards, I might go meet a friend to shoot photos or have meetings with potential clients. In the evening there is usually some event to attend or I’m relaxing with my husband at home. The one thing that is constant throughout my day is checking Instagram.

Relatable.

Q: What’s something you are into right now?

A: I recently watched Night Train to Lisbon and loved this quote: “We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place, we stay there, even though we go away. And there are things in us that we can find again only by going back there.” It really resonates with me since leaving Berlin.

Q: What do you have to say to those who think fashion isn’t for men?

A: To put it bluntly, they’re wrong. Fashion is about developing your own voice, it requires taking some risks. When someone emasculates men by saying: ”fashion isn’t for men” it’s usually to cover up their own insecurity that society has imposed on them about fashion. Fashion is for everyone. Tom Ford has said, “dressing well is a form of good manners.” I could not believe this more!

We’re right there with you Freddy!

Q: Is there anything exciting we can look forward to coming to the Blue Perk blog/life soon?

A: Yes! I just moved into my new apartment in Bushwick on March 1st with my husband and our best friend. I’ll be going to Berlin and Poland at the end of April, and then visiting Italy for the month of September, going to Rome and Sicily.

Q: And now for the question we’ve all been waiting for: what’s your favorite fashion Hot Sox sock?

A: Haha great last question! I really enjoy the fashion travel collection socks. They’re different and are fun to shoot when traveling to different places. Like the Hawaii pair that I just shot while was there on my honeymoon!
